The hardware at the center of a quality commercial system is most often the mortise lock. Unlike a standard door knob lock or cylindrical borer lock, a mortise lock is set into a pocket machined into the door edge, making it structurally integral to the door rather than surface-mounted. Mortise locks accept interchangeable cylinders, which is what makes them ideal for master keying — cylinders can be rekeyed or swapped independently without replacing the entire lockset. Self-serve key kiosks — including those located inside grocery stores and big-box retailers around Santa Monica — are a convenient option for simple house key duplicates. However, they are fundamentally unsuitable for any component of a master key system. A kiosk copies the physical cuts of a key it can optically read, but it has no awareness of the pinning matrix, the key control restrictions, or the authorization level of the key being duplicated. Copying a master key at a kiosk produces a cut duplicate with none of the access logic — and, more critically, breaks key control entirely, since you can no longer account for how many copies exist or who has them.
